3.0 out of 5 stars Good music, poor quality recording
The tracks on this CD are just what I was looking for, unfortunately the recordings are not very good. It seems as if the microphone was the other side of a window from the orchestra (incidentally, I have a very good hi-fi system). It was a reasonably priced CD so I guess you get what you pay for.

Please ignore the review below - the gentleman quite clearly has cloth in his ears. This is a splendid collection of "artificial" piano concertos from the golden age of cinema, the best known being the Warsaw Concerto. Philip Fowke is admirably partnered by his Irish conductor and orchestra and they give these slight but gorgeous scores their all. In particular, the Warsaw Concerto comes off splendidly well in EXCELLENT SOUND. Richard Rodney Bennett's waltz from Murder on the Orient Express is another winner. This is a super selection if you have a taste for romantic piano concertos. Great stuff.

5.0 out of 5 stars SUPERB SELECTION, 12 Jun 2009

This compilation was an brilliant idea. All the pieces are jewels of the piano concerto music on movies. And many times they stay obscure to the listener in the movies (such as the Warsaw concerto). It is a great buy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Very enjoyable, 11 Oct 2008
This review is from: Warsaw Concerto & Other Piano Concertos from the Movies (Audio CD)
Congratulations to Naxos for compiling this fine CD. The genre of romantic film music is admirably represented here in works from the 1940s and 50s, and gets first-rate performances and commitment from Fowke and the RTE Orchestra conducted by Ó Duinn.

5.0 out of 5 stars This will take you back to those movies!, 9 Feb 2010
This review is from: Warsaw Concerto & Other Piano Concertos from the Movies (Audio CD)
A stunning recording! It totally recaptures the mood of the wonderful romantic films from which the music is taken.

I find Mr Allen's review completely bewildering and can't agree with it. (Pity he has to stoop to insults, too: hardly sign of a balanced opinion; but, each to his own.)

This is pure gold, not least for the price!

5.0 out of 5 stars Mr. M. F. Allen has strange hearing(or Hi~Fi), 5 Sep 2008

I can only agree with Dr Scott.
Quite what disc Mr. M. F. Allen was listening to,and with what equipment I don't know.
However his whole review sounds more like a rant, than a balanced and informative review.
As this is a Naxos disc it is budget price as well, and certainly worth adding to your collection.

Good slection of old favourite semi-classical piano pieces.Definitely not the sharpest recording in the world, but then, it's not the most expensive CD in the world either.

2.0 out of 5 stars Faulty CD, 2 Feb 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Warsaw Concerto & Other Piano Concertos from the Movies (Audio CD)
The two starts are for the perfectly good performances. However, as others have noted - but not all - there is something wrong with this CD. As soon as you put it on, you can hear extra niose coming from the CD player as it desperatly tries to extract the digital information. Then I got to track 6 and it just stopped playing properly at all. Shame. Not up to the usually reliable standards of Naxos. A pity for he musicians as well. It might play on your CD player if you buy it, it might not - but it not reliable at any rate.
