5.0 out of 5 stars Compelling and rewarding music and recordings., 22 Mar 2008

This review is from: Mozart: Symphonies, Nos 38 'Prague' & 39 /Pinnock (Audio CD)
The last few symphonies of Mozart are a compelling listen that delight and bewilder that make you keep going back and listening to them again and again. It's best to get a recording that will do justice to the music. The interpretations by The English Concert/Pinnock are inspired recordings that will reward repetitive listens. I have owned many different recordings of this pair of symphonies but none match the perfection of these performances. Recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fine disc from Pinnock's outstanding complete set of symphonies, 8 Oct 2013

This review is from: Mozart: Symphonies, Nos 38 'Prague' & 39 /Pinnock (Audio CD)
This disc, taken from the boxed set of the complete symphonies, is an inspiring testament to Mozart, to Pinnock, to his orchestra and to the sound engineers. Although, inevitably, this pair of symphonies is well represented in my collection by many renowned recordings on both period and modern chamber orchestras led by renowned conductors of several generations, the complete set of recordings by Pinnock has proved hard to match and impossible to beat.

This late pair of symphonies simply marks the growing culmination of both Mozart's symphonic output and also this considerable recording venture. At neither point has either faltered. It is rare to find recordings where one can honestly say 'well that's perfect' but this one comes remarkable close. The use of period instruments played at this level is that one can so much more readily appreciate the level of individual and corporate dialogue that Mozart built into both works and which so often is submerged beneath incorrect balances or textures.

I can only suggest to collectors that if you cannot run to the whole set, then buy as many of the greatest symphonies as you can from this set. This disc will do admirably for a start!
