This CD is wonderful! The range of material included is excellent, running from 11th century religious content to modern works written just a few years ago. The works are extremely varied, but the CD works on the common themes of music with a modal sound and of music of mourning (hence the subtitle "Ancient Tears"). The use of traditions and instruments from other cultures is refreshing, and the different styles serve to hold the listeners interest. The sounds and melodies grab the attention at once, but the intricacy of the music keeps you interested on subsequent listenings - keep an ear out in particular for the first musically coherent quarter tone playing I've ever heard (!), which crops up in track 6.
This CD is a great achievement, linking as it does such a variety of music in such a satisfyingly coherent manner. It highlights links between modern pieces and their ancient predecessors which you would never have thought could exist if you had not heard this. I urge anyone with an interest in either the ancient or modern side of music, or indeed anyone else, to buy this at once - you will find it both enjoyable and immensely enlightening.
