TOP 500 REVIEWERon 22 April 2014
This excellent album by the pianist/composer Horace Silver(1928-2014) comprises three quintet pieces(recorded in New Jersey on November 2, 1966) with Silver(piano); Tyrone Washington(tenor sax); Woody Shaw(trumpet); Larry Ridley(bass) & Roger Humphries(drums) plus James Spaulding(alto sax & flute) on three sextet pieces(recorded in New Jersey on November 25, 1966.
All six memorable compositions are originals by the leader with superb playing from all members of the quintet/sextet.
'The Jody Grind' , sadly now hard to find, is an unjustly overlooked Horace Silver album which should appeal to anyone who enjoys swinging and soulful hard bop.
