5.0 out of 5 stars The whole caboodle, 10 Jan. 2010

Beautiful singing from a consummate artist. The recording is showing its age from a technical point of view, but for me this doesn't detract one jot from the enjoyment. Power and tenderness, passion and love, light and dark - it's all here. I'm still looking for a current performer who can match it. Any suggestions?

5.0 out of 5 stars A younger Hans Hotter, 6 Aug. 2009

An excellent disc with Hans Hotter in his prime. He has none of the tremble which came in to his later recordings such as the George Scholti's recording of Wagner's Ring. The only criticism is the lack of a booklet giving details and translations but that often happens with re-issues.

4.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, but without sparkle, 22 Aug. 2011
By
Per Arne Rudberg "P-A Rudberg" (Vallentuna, Sweden) - See all my reviews

This review is from: Schubert - Lieder (Audio CD)
Hotter was a superb singer, able to do both Wagner's Wotan and Schubert Lieder. His warm voice and intelligent understanding of the texts are somewhat unique.
In these songs he focuses on the sadness, the anxiety and the grandeur. And he does it like nobody else.
But - he doesn't evoke the feelings of brightness, sparkle and quick perception that these songs are also about. His voice and his reading get to "heavy" for that. Listen for example at the opening of Liebesbotchaft or An die Musik.
