This review is from: Dvorak.Symphony No. 9 "from the New World"; Symphonic Variations (Audio CD)
This disc, recorded in 1982 (symphony) and 1980 (Variations) was well thought of when it was issued. It was listed as one of the best buys in the Penguin Guide and there is really no reason to question this assessment many years later.

The performance of the symphony has the great advantage of sounding like an act of live music making and not sounding like a studio-bound run through. The orchestra does not sound anything like a Czech orchestra being much more 'beefy' and typical of the orchestra at that time but it is well recorded and benefits enormously by having the Czech conductor, Zdenek Macal, to conduct. This results in a very sympathetic interpretation which still has the ability to connect with the listener.

The Symphonic Variations make for a generous coupling and are equally well played and recorded.

In summary, I would suggest that if the program appeals, this disc at a budget price offers far more than a budget performance and is well worth considering as either an 'only' purchase or as part of a more extensive collection with multiple versions.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dvorak's 9th Symphony, 10 Mar 2012

What a multitude of recordings there are available of the 9th Symphony. Why should you choose this one? Quite simply, the conductor engages the listener throughout with a faithful interpretation. The symphony is filled with memorable tunes and brilliant orchestration; tempi are well chosen and the performance has drive and energy. The CD is completed with a lovely performance of the marvellously inventive Symphonic Variations.

I would recommend this recording without reservation.
