4.0 out of 5 stars holy comedy, 14 April 2007
This review is from: Landi: Il Sant'Alessio (Audio CD)
This is idiomatically like earlish Monteverdi (dates to about 1630), but one of the better pieces and recordings of its type. The reason in the main is the very differentiated approach to the various sections and register of the story. There are both infernal (so regal etc.) and (genuinely amusing - cosa incredibile) comic scenes (understandably, a duo of Romans think the self-sacrificial attitiude of the saint indecent), as well as the obligatory mellifluous (Orfeo-ian) yearning of the eponymous (Alexis) saint. Singing is first-rate. NOt quite a masterpiece perhaps, but better than Peri for example.
