4.0 out of 5 stars Biohazard's early hardcore days, 2 Dec 2012
By
This review is from: Biohazard (Audio CD)
Biohazard's self-titled debut album was released in 1990 originally on a label called 'Magnetic air'. It's a fantastic album that crosses hardcore punk with a form of thrash metal with rap and shouting style vocals. It's raw Biohazard, the band at their early stages with little polishing done to the music. Having said that it is an amazing album with all the Biohazard themes present from the beginning. There are some amazing hardcore tracks here and even though some of the songs standout from the others there isn't a bad song among them. The album artwork is reflective of the album's name with a baby sat on a concrete/tarmac slab left behind from what appears to be a nuclear blast with the city destroyed and glowing orange in the background. It somewhat reflects the lyrics about injustice and cruelty.

The album begins with an iconic speech intro from The Godfather part II. What follows are some great tracks with themes about standing up for what you believe in, drugs, gangs and urban life in general. There are 12 songs and 1 instrumental track. The strongest tracks are Retribution, Victory, Wrong side of the tracks and Hold my own (the best 2 in my opinion with Hold my own being as Evan once said "a theme song motto" and 1 of my personal favourites of theirs) and the final track Scarred for life. The mixing of Evan and Billy's voices is great, Bobby's guitar work is very noticeable, and although this may not be the band at their best it is a portrayal of all their talents and how great they were from the start. Although the majority of their greatest material followed on (Urban discipline developed the original style set here) this set the standard for an incredible band.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very tight - hardcore through and through, 29 Sep 2001

This album, the first of biohazards many is true to form - the hardcore style seeps through you like a chain saw through a metal fence - retribution and victory hold up well and the crunching howard beach sets off the rest of the album perfectly with the well timed pain coming in to sever your ear drums at just the right time - all of this mixed with the harmonics that only biohazard can combine with hardcore phonics means an excellent album although not recommended for first time listeners - that slot is reserved for state of the world address
