5.0 out of 5 stars Brutal, scary, eerie, sludgy,..Brilliant!, 29 July 2002
This review is from: Iron Monkey (Audio CD)
Now THIS is scary music! Iron Monkey really carved a niche for themselves in the late 90's with their blend of stoner riffs, doomy grooves and throat shredding vocals. With high profile rock associates (such as Ross Robinson, Phil Anselmo and Amen to name but a few) singing their praises you really can't go wrong. This mini-album is a classic introduction to a short lived band who's influence still reigns on in today's metal scene. Johnny Morrow (Iron Monkey's lead growler) died last month, do yourself a favour and check this out to see what an amazing vocalist the metal world has just lost. R.I.P Johnny x

Possibly one of the most under-rated U.K. bands ever, Iron Monkey were definitely marching to the beat of their own deranged drum. This, their self-titled debut mini-album is, without doubt, one of the best sludge metal records of all time. Johnny Morrow's vocals are possibly the sickest ever recorded and as such the lyrics are a total (but gloriously cacophonous) mystery. As for the guitar, I don't think that I have ever heard so many down-tuned, grinding Black Sabbathesque excuses to bang your head in so short a space of time on any other record. If you are new to the whole "doom/stoner/sludge" thing than this album is a brilliant place to start. If you are not, then WHY THE HELL DON'T YOU OWN THIS? Sick, ingenious and undeniably heavy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Crushingly Intense, 7 Oct 2001

Iron Monkey are possibly one of the most brutal bands to come out of the UK who dont use major computer trickery. Using thick sludge riffs, throbbing bass and stoner grooves to create a thick sound, the amazing gravel-gargling vocals really do make this an evil, disturbed cd. There are a lot of current so-called heavy UK bands (RSH, Charger and Defenstration) trying to recreate this sound, but Iron Monkey really did create something incredible on this album
An album to kill the commercialised, pre-packaged 'rage' of bands like Slipknot, IM never needed a goat to prove they were dark and twisted. Tune in, stone out and go to a scary place. They're waiting for you
