5.0 out of 5 stars Magnificent collection of Baroque chamber music
This collection of chamber pieces by Pachelbel, Handel, Vivaldi and Gluck is a CD release of a 1992 tape which was one of the best music recordings I ever owned. So much so that I wore the tape out! So I was very pleased to find that it has been re-released on a disc which I could buy instead.

Particular high points include

* It has one of the best...

1.0 out of 5 stars Screech, screech ...
Tinny, screechy violin on opening track - sounds like a child learning to play! No lush strings. I've heard much better versions but thought Pachelbel Canon universal sound.

How wrong was I?!! Ya pays yer money, you gets yer choice ...

* It has one of the best performances I have heard, not just of Pachelbel's canon, but the Gigue which follows and which you don't hear nearly as often

* An absolutely haunting rendering of some of the best passages from Handel's water music

* Dances of the Blessed Spirits and the Furies from Gluck's Orpheus in the Underworld - this performance of the Dance of the Furies really sets the blood racing.

I've singled out my favourite bits from the cassette but the other items on it are also good - there isn't a duff section on it.

Christopher Hogwood and the Academy of Ancient Music really excelled themselves with these performances and if you are at all into Baroque Music I can really recommend this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars A beautiful recording - highly recommended, 16 Oct. 2014

This is a very lovely selection of music played on period instruments. This is intended to allow us to hear the music as the composers would have heard it rather and as it sounds on modern instruments. The difference is not something most listeners would live or die for.
The first piece on the disc is Pachelbel's Canon and Gigue. It was written for three violins and a continuo, the latter most usually a cello. As such, it is effectively a string quartet and heard live, it is magical. There is nothing screechy in this performance even when played on modest equipment. On the included mp3 it does not sound great but that is why the format has been obsolete for years. I have heard this piece scored for an orchestra (lush strings) as well as for electric guitars. While both may have their place as entertainment, if you listen to either carefully enough, you may hear Johann turning quietly in his grave. Simply put, they are not what he had in mind and not at all what this piece sounds like in reality.
The remainder of the disc includes some well known pieces and the Corelli is especially beautiful - and just as famous as the first track.
