5.0 out of 5 stars check other version first, 6 Mar. 2013
This review is from: Mack The Knife: The Complete Ella In Berlin (Audio CD)
Note that there's also a 2011 Essential Jazz Classics version, which contains these 13 tracks, plus another 7 from the Cannes festival 1959.

The track numbering is different on that one, as it doesn't list the intros as separate tracks.

See Ella in Berlin - Mack the Knife + bonus tracks

The important point is it's a lot cheaper than this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ella at her best, 14 Nov. 2012

Even though this was recorded live in 1960 the quality is good and the atmosphere adds to the entertainment. The only thing that I don't like is that they have separated the applause from five of the tracks - it detracts from the track itself and having a 30 second track of applause and perhaps Ella saying 'thank you' is a bit odd. But it is an excellent album, Ella at her swinging best with a superb quartet accompanying her.

5.0 out of 5 stars HOT in Berlin, 27 April 2010
This review is from: Mack The Knife: The Complete Ella In Berlin (Audio CD)
This live album is everything it's supposed to be. Ella is the top, she's the colloseum, the Louvre museum, as Cole Porter would probably say...

Also, in her crowdpleasing, she is doing some greatest-hits routines (yap, the famous "Mack the Knife" version is here...), but relentlessly swinging all the way. Maybe even hotter than Ella In Rome - The Birthday Concert,
this album is not necessarily better, but it IS one of the best Ella's albums I've heard so far, quite comparable to Ella Swings Lightly , or Ella And Louis Again...

On Ella in Berlin Paul Smith's fine quartet is just a springboard from which Ella jumps to one of her recorded hights. I recommend it warmly.

Ella and the band are marvellous, but it's a shame about the terrible edits between tracks. Nice that the audience doesn't burst into applause when each song starts...

This is Ella at her absolute peak.
Not only is the title track terrific, her rendition of 'How High the Moon' is the definitive scat track of all time
