The tempi are generally fast creating great dynamism and vitality. The dynamic contrasts are often exaggerated for good effect creating performances that are vital and highly dramatic, so much the better since these are overtures to operas: including William Tell, Il Signor Bruschino, La Gaza Ladra, Il Turco in Italia, L'Italiana in Algeri, Il viaggio a Reims, Il Barbiere, Torvaldo e Dorliska, La Cambiale di Matrimonio, Otello, Semiramide, Le Siege de Corinth, Tancredi. I think that this collection is a first choice for the Rossini overtures, even though it is not a complete collection, all the performances are magnificent. Many Rossini overtures are very avant garde technically and for their beauty of form and sound they rival some of Mozart's middle symphonies and the overtures of Mozart's middle operas; they even reach into the future to hearld the world of Verdi (Falstaff, Otello etc.) etc. All the Rossini overtures are an essential part of every collection of classical music. This compilation lacks the overture to Armide however, a very exceptional overture indeed. For the complete collection including the overture to Armide, see:Rossini: Complete OverturesFor very good recordings of 5 Rossini early 1 act operas the overtures of some of which are included here in this collection (Il Sig. Bruschino, La Gaza Ladra, Il Cambiale Matriomonio)see the Brilliant collection where all the performances are very good indeed:Rossini - The Five one Act One Operas

This review is from: Rossini: 14 Overtures (Audio CD)
These two well recorded discs were recorded in 1981 and 1984. A while later Chailly re-recorded a number of the overtures with the La Scala orchestra with very good sound and faster tempi. Those were too fast for the lower brass to articulate as cleanly as on this pair of discs.

The performances on these two discs are taken about as fast as can be done with absolute precision and clarity on modern lower brass with their wider bores. Only period brass can go faster with precision because of their smaller bores which enable both greater flexibility and rapid response to tonguing (a smaller column of air to move!)

Apart from that consideration, Chailly clearly encourages and enables his orchestra to play with style, some swagger and evident enjoyment. This is an achievement with such often-played repertoire. Too often discs of Rossini overtures became mere technical displays of fast playing. Beecham, many years ago, knew how to obtain musical rewards from these pieces and that awareness has been largely grasped by the period instrument productions. It is therefore a pleasure to report that Chailly's 'traditional' set here is of the same awareness.

In conclusion I would suggest that this set deserves to be given serious consideration by anyone interested in 'traditional' big band Rossini playing done very well and well recorded. I would also suggest supplementing this with one of the period orchestra versions too - but that is a different story!

When will I learn, the music is excellent and varied. However as always when I buy a CD to replace an old analogue piece of vinyl I still find that the presence is not quite there despite having CD for a good number of years. The old Linn Sondek still shows that Vinyl is the medium to use.
