Sir Georg Solti had such a long recording career, mostly with Decca, that to my regret I often took his performances for granted. There was a regular series of issues from him, of operatic, choral and orchestral music, usually of masterpieces from the great Romantic repertoire, and it was easy to overlook the extraordinary high quality of music making which came from him whichever ensemble or group of artistes he was working with.
This compact disc of music by Hungarian composers close to Solti's heart, indeed, he knew both Bartok and Kodaly, is a welcome reminder of just how great a musician he was, especially when he directed the incomparable Chicago Symphony. These are "live" recordings and performances of great refinement, brilliance, elegance and precision. Highly recommended as a reminder of a wonderful musician, a great orchestra, and as an introduction to masterpieces of the Hungarian repertoire.
