This review is from: Messiaen: Turangalīla Symphony (Audio CD)
This has long been one of my favourite pieces of music and I have seen it in concert and owned many recordings. Up until I heard this recording, Simon Rattle was my favourite interpreter of Messiaen's masterpiece in concert, or on this Messiaen : Turangalila Symphonie.

However, Rattle's version has a subdued Ondes Martenot part which is hardly heard and for me, the ethereal sound of this unusual instrument is at the heart of this exotic work and forms a big part of its unique "flavour".

Whereas on the Rattle recording, the Ondes Martenot is submerged in the strings, just part of the ensemble - on this recording it swoops and howls like a ghostly banshee!

Of course you would expect the Concertgebouw to be a "safe pair of hands" and they have contributed to many cycles of great recordings. But here they are galvanised by Chailly onto another level with much more energy and drive than Rattle's Birmingham Symphony.

I won't comment on the music itself, which is now so well-known - despite its apparent status as a "difficult", atonal piece. There is plenty of interest for any listener to hang on to and the sound world is like nothing else - massed percussion, bird-like piano and the eerie, Ondes Martenot providing other-worldly melodies. The sound here is superb - everything is clear - which is remarkable, given the size of the orchestra and the complexity of the forces used. There is an SACD which is hard to get - but the CD sound is still stunning.

If you have never heard the piece and want a starting point - listen to movement 5 - for some of the most exciting and chaotic music ever written or played! In this recording - truly thrilling!
