5.0 out of 5 stars The World's Foremost Interpreter of Brecht & Weill, 7 Nov 2008
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Ute Lemper Sings Kurt Weill (Audio CD)
It's twenty years now since Lemper recorded her piéce de resistance. Though I have criticised her in the past for some of her Piaf and Dietrich interpretations (she murders "L'accordéoniste) here she is flawless. Only Lotte Lenya, and maybe Pia Colombo, reached this level of perfection. Moreover, as would happen quite a lot during her later career, Lemper took uncalculated risks by recording some of the lesser known works of Brecht and Weill: "Die Ballade von der sexuellen horigkeit" and "Zu Potsdam under den Eichen" and "Nanna's Lied" are difficult pieces to pull off, yet Lemper clears the hurdles with comparative ease. "Alabama Song" has to be here, of course, along with "Mackie Messer". But the two pearls sitting at the top of this very bejewelled crown have to be "Denn wie man sicht bettet so liegt man", which always brought Lenya and Colombo standing ovations...and "La Complainte de La Seine", which here becomes an emotion-charged "Je ne t'aime pas". Formidable!
I would recommend this as the ideal companion piece for Lemper's later album of Berlin Theatre Songs--the German language version, where Lemper unleashes those gutteral vocals like a Teutonic tidal wave.

I have always admired Ute Lemper as an interpreter of Kurt Weill's songs, and this disc is certainly a fine example of her work.

This review is from: Ute Lemper Sings Kurt Weill (Audio CD)
Ute Lemper has made something of a speciality singing the music of Kurt Weill; she is, I suppose, the Lotte Lenya de nos jours, but her vocal prowess far exceeds that of her illustrious predecessor. As the sleeve notes point out, the traditional throaty, declamatory way of singing does not always do justice to Weill’s music, but Lemper is a fine singer who nevertheless does full justice to the texts.

Not all of the songs here were originally sung by Lenya; indeed, some of them are usually sung by a man, but Lemper carries them all off with considerable aplomb, both the familiar and the less well known numbers. “Der Silbersee” is represented by five tracks and a further three come from Weill’s most famous work, “Die Dreigroschenoper”. Less well known are the songs from the Berliner Requiem, but we are on more familiar ground again with his opera “Aufstieg und Fall der Stadt Mahagonny”, with its wonderful “Alabama-Song”.

Lemper proves herself to be an excellent linguist, singing not only in her native German, but also in French (“Je ne t’aime pas”) and in English, with a selection of songs from that fine musical “One Touch of Venus” (book by S.J.Perelman and Ogden Nash, no less!), which I saw performed so memorably not that many years ago by Opera North.

Expert accompaniment is provided by the RIAS Berlin Kammerensemble under John Mauceri, who certainly knows his way around this music.

Much to my surprise, the disc was made as long ago as 1988, but the recorded sound is first class.
