Predictably excellent, when you think about it; I can't believe it took me so long before even looking for this collection. "Thank you", to reviewers who nudged me into buying it.
Some interpretations of individual sonatas by other great artists may be more profound but, as a set, this is unsurpassed. Brendel brings a unique insight to each work. They need to be played again and again.
I shall still be keeping versions by Rosen, Arrau and Solomon (especially Solomon, despite that glitch in the Opus 110 which proved so ominous). The Pollini recordings are wonderfully virtuosic but somehow no longer have the same appeal.
Amazon are spot on when they suggest that "other customers also viewed": Brendel's double CD of Favourite Beethoven Sonatas. That is excellent, too. You can hardly go wrong at the price with either set, whether you eventually decide to keep them or not.
