5.0 out of 5 stars Alfred Brendels Approach, 20 Oct 2009

I was used to hearing faster and louder versions of these great late Beethoven Piano Sonatas, perhaps by Richter and Ashkenazy. But I am now much happier with Brendel's more balanced approach of quieter and slower passages in these late Sonatas matched with power and speed elsewhere. The slower and quiter parts of the movements in these sonatas are nothing but sublime, particularly in the last Sonata Opus 111.
I would recomend this set of CD's to all lovers of late Beethoven Piano Sonatas.

I was absolutely delighted when I received this last week.

Having only owned Pollini's version of the Hammerklavier sonata, it was a joy to hear a different interpretation as well as having 4 others sonatas spread over 2 CDs. At this price AND with this artist, anyone wanting a version of the Late Beethoven sonatas will not be disappointed.

Predictably excellent, when you think about it; I can't believe it took me so long before even looking for this collection. "Thank you", to reviewers who nudged me into buying it.

Some interpretations of individual sonatas by other great artists may be more profound but, as a set, this is unsurpassed. Brendel brings a unique insight to each work. They need to be played again and again.

I shall still be keeping versions by Rosen, Arrau and Solomon (especially Solomon, despite that glitch in the Opus 110 which proved so ominous). The Pollini recordings are wonderfully virtuosic but somehow no longer have the same appeal.

Amazon are spot on when they suggest that "other customers also viewed": Brendel's double CD of Favourite Beethoven Sonatas. That is excellent, too. You can hardly go wrong at the price with either set, whether you eventually decide to keep them or not.

What can one say about Alfred Brendel? And link him to Mozart and the result is sheer heaven. Brendel has, over the years, made several recordings of Mozart, and as he has aged, his perception of the nuances within the music has improved. This recording is no exception; a delight to listen to.
