This review is from: Rachmaninov: Complete Works for Piano and Orchestra (Audio CD)
I bought this set of Complete Rachmaninov Concertos more than 20 years ago, and it still remains one of the most satisfying sets after listening to most of recommended recordings. Technically Orozco can match any past masters like Richter, Michelangeli, Kapell and the composer himself. He has wide range of dynamics and keen sense of tonal delicacy when it's necessary. he never indulges in personal display of virtuosity (Gavrilov) or sentimentality. But he is not emotionally detached either (Rachmaninov), he knows how to express both music and himself in a most involving way.

Amazing thing is that rarely nothing goes wrong in all five works. Especially 2nd is free from all the wierd mannerism associated with this concerto which many of today's pianists are guilty of. The opening is perfectly judged, neither too slow (Richter) nor too fast (Shelley). The silence just before the last climax is most compellingly excuted. How many pianists and orchestras slip there! The rest of Concertos & Paganini Rhapsody are also outstanding.

If you seek great recordings of individual work, Horowitz, Richter (Melodiya & Russia Revelation), Michelangeli, William Kapell, Byron Janis, Lazar Berman, Tamas Vasary are must. But as complete set this is still the winner. Reasonablly well recorded with fine balance between piano & orchestra.

If you like Rachmaninov, this disc is a must have.

If you think you don't, this could well change your mind. It is music making of the highest level - and what a fellow Rachmaninov was! He must be deliriously exciting to play - he certainly is to listen to on this disc.
