This review is from: RHAPSODY IN BLUE /GERSHWIN/PREVIN (Audio CD)
Among Previn's numerous recordings of Gershwin's works for piano and orchestra, this Philips version with Pittsburgh SO is very impressive. First of all the recording quality is far better than other recordings, capturing Previn's dazzling playing and the orchestra's vivid colours with natural clarity. Previn plays the both works brilliantly with amazing dexterity and delicacy. I would give 5 stars if there's a bit more wildness and rhythmic energy in the performances. An American in Paris is superbly played throughout.

4.0 out of 5 stars Don't like the interpretation of 'Rhapsody in Blue' but the Concerto and 'American in Paris' are great, 13 Mar 2014

This review is from: RHAPSODY IN BLUE /GERSHWIN/PREVIN (Audio CD)
As one would expect from Andre Previn, the piano work on all three tracks is impeccable. The orchestra plays tightly and in balance with the piano. The recording is crystal clear.

And yet ... this is the recording of 'Rhapsody in Blue' that I rarely go to. The reason is that the performance, for me, lacks the essential 'feel' that makes the Rhapsody such a popular and enigmatic work. From the opening glissando, which here is straight up and on, there is nothing to get the hairs on the back of my neck standing. The blue notes are played but not emphasised. It's an almost academic reading.

I suppose it comes down to individual preferences. Here we have a perfect recording of an interpretation that I really don't like. But you might.

The concerto and 'American in Paris' are great, however, both five star performances. Much more suited to Previn's style. Overall, four stars.
