4.0 out of 5 stars Quality Hardcore Tunefull Punk
This album kicks off in the usual AFI way taking no time to start off the frantic riffs and tunefull melodies. Davy's voice is outstanding and the riffs are amazing on songs like "Let It Be Broke" and "Third Season". The band don't put a foot wrong and the whole album is spilt out in 30 minutes. But with lots of tracks there is quite a bit of variety...

AFIs third album is a quick fired angry album that spits and snarls at the listener and is more punk led than the classy goth tinged rock that they perform these days and while shut your mouth is good it pales in comparison with latter releases but is still enjoyable at the same time.

The album contains 14 songs that race in at a combined total of 28 minutes so...

AFIs third album is a quick fired angry album that spits and snarls at the listener and is more punk led than the classy goth tinged rock that they perform these days and while shut your mouth is good it pales in comparison with latter releases but is still enjoyable at the same time.

The album contains 14 songs that race in at a combined total of 28 minutes so you can tell that manic punk is the order of the day but being AFI this is still extremely melodic and daveys vocals are gaining strength by this release.

The key songs are three reasons, three seconds notice and salt for your wounds, the other songs are good as well but these three songs include great melodies and offer more style than just a straightforward punky number. In conclusion shut your mouth is a solid album from a band who were well on their way to domination even if they didnt know it at the time of this release.

3.0 out of 5 stars AFI with an edge!, 25 July 2012

AFI have, in my opinion, had a bit of a strange career climbing up to the peak of a mountain and making the stratospheric `Art of Drowning', an unbeatable album, before rolling down the other side of the mountain with their more poppy efforts.

Which side of the mountain you prefer will depend on how hardcore you like your punk. If your new to AFI start with the Art of Drowning and move forward in time if you like a more pop punk clean and tidy feel and move backwards in time if you like to tear it up.

This is not their best album, but it is nice and raw with lots of short sharp songs which are to the point and which touch upon what they will eventually become but which shine in their own right.

oh and for the record I prefer this side of the mountain.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finding Their Stride 3 Albums In, 6 May 2013

AFI's first two albums were great hardcore punk records in their own right but it wasn't until this album that they started to form their trademark sound and gothish lyrics. This would be the beginnings of what would later appear on Black Sails and Art Of Drowning. A brilliant record with catchy melodic songs showing a band finding new found rigour.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unreal, 30 Sept. 2005
By A Customer
This review is from: Shut Your Mouth And Open Your Eyes (Audio CD)
I found AFI quite by chance when living in South Africa. This album, the first I bought and must have been in 1998, is just plain unreal. It blew me away then and still does today, I bought a few more albums thinking I was onto something, Black Sails is good, but nothing comes close to the "original". It cuts to the bone. you won't regret it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Shut Your Mouth..., 16 Jun. 2003
This review is from: Shut Your Mouth And Open Your Eyes (Audio CD)
Here it is, the transitional album between AFI of Old, a poor punk rock band and AFI of new, a great neo-goth punk rock band. The 'goth' is certainly creeping in here and the music is beginning to find its own feet (despite the fact that Jade has yet to join). 'Three Reasons' and 'Third Season' are the standout tracks here. The rest of the album, while isn't bad, isn't anything to get excited about.
