5.0 out of 5 stars Best Riot Grrl Album, 23 Mar. 2010

Sadly, Heavens to Besty are not as widely known as other Riot Grrl bands such as Bikini Kill or Bratmobile, but they have a sophistication and a passion that isn't matched by these two bands. This has quickly become one of my favourite albums. The songs range from loud, fast punk to more mellow songs and unlike quite a few albums by riot grrls, every song stands out on its own. The emotion and passion on this record cannot be equalled, Corin Tucker's vocals are raw yet have a tender edge. Complicated perfectly sums this up, it starts of slow and builds up, and the vocals gradually turn into a (still tuneful) shriek that alternately begs a lover to stay and then screams at him to leave. Other highlights are "White Girl", about racism; it is an incredibly beautiful yet simple song. "Axemen" is probably my favourite track and "Terrorist" is also a standout song. Confusion is a clear theme throughout the album, shown in both lyrics and the shifting sounds found on each track.

The song writing on this album is amazing and the tracks come together to create one of the most listenable and creative statements to come out of Olympia.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not to be overlooked., 18 Jun. 2005

I didn't really pay much attention to this album when I first heard it. It was only when I listened to it again that I realised how much I had underestimated it. The album can easily be listened to all the way through.
The album is passionate but does not turn into just angry noise. What I like lyrically is that the songs are not about being a victim. There seem to be too many bands who enjoy wallowing in such melodrama.
Although it features songs that have anger and violent fantasies, there are also songs that display feelings of hurt and desire for closeness.
Unlike many albums that are made up of "make up" and "break up" songs, 'Calculated' covers many different subjects. Rather than falling into the trap of being overly righteous in it's lyrics, this album is more self questioning, a value I think is most clearly demonstrated in the track 'White girl'.
The album has most of the lyrics written in the inside cover.
