This is even better than its predecessor. There's more confidence in the playing and the programme is especially well chosen, with its emphasis on I-never-knew-it-was-called-that tunes. Fans of the Archers will be pleased to hear its signature tune in its entirety. The whole programme is top-drawer but unexpectedly my special favourite is Finck's In the Shadows--I'd heard it before but this time the tune really got into my blood. Good to see this series continuing.

This disc, made in 1996, continues the series started a little while earlier and which proved to be very popular. For many listeners who listened to the radio as background music up to the mid 1950's, this selection of music will feel very familiar and will bring back many memories of time long past.pieces have also been used as theme music for radio and television broadcasts. Curiously, the generation post WW2 who may well have avoided this range of music as being hopelessly dated at the time, are now finding it pleasantly nostalgic!

Suffice it to say that here there are 20 pieces which are completely representative of the times (first half of the 20th century) and which are played in a completely authentic manner. Ronald Corp is a sympathetic conductor and the music is well played in that way by the excellent orchestra. The pieces make for a well-balanced complete program and can be played from start to finish completely enjoyable without finding the sequence of so many short items wearing in any way. What becomes apparent is the obvious compositional skills of the various composers in the idiom.

Hyperion can usually be relied upon to produce good recordings of full range and realistic balance and that is what we have here. For those interested in the program this should give plenty of satisfaction. There is now a box set of the whole series to consider as well. Enthusiasts may also be interested in the American and European light music discs in this series.

A well packed collection of light music classics. Reading the titles of the pieces, you probably think that you don't know them - you do! The challenge will be to identify where you have heard the pieces before - quite a few were used as theme tunes for radio or TV programmes. All the pieces are well played with a good sense of style.

A brilliant CD featuring lots of well known music which is easily recognised when heard but not always when just reading the name. Lots of lovely tunes for easy listening, guaranteed to bring back memories for older listeners like myself!

Have recently purchased this cd, and was more than pleased with the excellent presentation, quality, and crisp clear sound recording
of all tracks. My three favourite tracks out of this compilation are Barwick Green- theme tune for Radio 4's The Archers, March- theme tune for the 60's BBC tv series Dr. Finlay's Casebook, and The Grasshopper's Dance. I first bought British Light Music Classics(Volume 1) back in 1996, when I used to shop regularly at my local HMV store in my home town of Manchester. Again, I was more than pleased with that cd also. Well worth the 5 star rating! Enjoy!!

Nice selection of music that took me back to my childhood, hearing my mother singing.
