This is a good quality CD and well worth a listen if you are a diehard fan, but it could be a bit repetitious if you aren't. The movie versions and the alternate versions of the songs are both good, but not needed for anyone but the real purist amongst Elvis fans. A bit too much for the casual listener (my wife) who kept saying "he's just sang this one a minute ago", so buy youself a pair of headphones if you want to listen in peace !.

An epic album by Elvis Presley with many bonus tracks as the film didn't have that many numbers in it.

Jailhouse Rock is the definitive rock n roll movie, and at last 40 years later an album is finally released.
The song Jailhouse Rock was groundbreaking in its rawness and really took rock n roll to new places.
The film was released in 1957, and the EP Jailhouse Rock was a massive seller; almost 2 million copies sold in America alone, this was an unpresidented amount as it sat atop the EP chart for 28 weeks.
The single Jailhouse Rock sold close to 3 million in America, was #1 on Billboard for 6 weeks whilst also topping the country and r&b charts.
In Britain Jailhouse Rock was the first single ever to go straight to #1, in fact Elvis had the first 2 songs ever to debut at #1 in Britain, he done it again with Its Now Or Never in 1960.
Without promotion this CD has reached platinum statues in America, its a fantastic CD, buy this and the movie

... this is an interesting release that I came across. Sadly no picture appears here, but the album is a re-issue of the Jailhouse Rock soundtrack with original versions and various bonus tracks and outtakes. As a bonus there is a 7" 33rpm bonus ep (dressed up as an original, but how original it would be is dubious) The ep is a nice piece of vinyl with 50s styled sleeve and the Black and silver RCA label. The main LP is a little disappointing with a photo label, though there is a good accompanying 12" booklet. I know that there are 3 other LPs in this series (Lovin' You, GI Blues and Blue Hawaii), however as my love of Elvis films doesn't stretch much beyond Jailhouse Rock, I have only purchased Lovin' You (which has a good tracklisting) and follows the same format of LP with picture label and a pseudo ep.

An average rating as this is a really good idea whose execution leaves a little to be desired.

As an aside, the Elvis back catalogue is a messy tortuous web with a myriad of compilations that makes it near impossible to discern what Elvis did in any sort of sequence. Perhaps one day a proper vinyl retrospective will be produced.
