5.0 out of 5 stars Youth Revisited, 1 May 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: This Is the Day This Is the Hour (Audio CD)
While 'The The' saw Islam rising and Christians mobilising, the Poppies knew it would be American Pop culture that would destroy us all.
This was the innovative path music was taking before Oasis caused a generation to embrace mediocrity.
Stealing your riff is fine...its what you do with it that counts! Buy this and see how things should have been.

5.0 out of 5 stars Buy this one if you are going to buy any PWEI album, 14 April 2003

This review is from: This Is the Day This Is the Hour (Audio CD)
This album is simply superb - superb sounding guitars, sequencers/sampling and lyrics with humour and not a little irony. At times the music can almost lurch into "industrial" territory (a compliment in my view).
If I had to keep any one of all the PWEI albums I had this would be the one I'd keep. Box Frenzy is the next best with Cure for Sanity and Dos Dedos Mis Amigos fighting it out for third place.

5.0 out of 5 stars Seminal sampling-led hip-hop, 1 Nov 2000

This review is from: This Is the Day This Is the Hour (Audio CD)
This astounding album saw PWEI mutate from midlands fuzz guitar exponents into one of the world's leading exponents of hip-hop. Fabulous samples, way cool lyrics and some downright fabulous songs -- Especially singles Can U Dig IT and Wise Up Sucker! -- make this a landmark thta I've been listening to for ten years. PWEI never did better.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic album from the Poppies!!!, 8 Jun 2001
This review is from: This Is the Day This Is the Hour (Audio CD)
This is a great album!!! It's a shame that the Poppies didn't get the sucess they deserved because songs like Wake Up! Time to die, Def.Con.One and The fuses have been lit deserve to be top 10 hits!
Some of the songs grate a bit (but then again i have listened to it a LOT) and the short songs are a tiny bit silly (though rather cool), but overall it is a fantastic album! Don't hesitate to buy this, as you won't regret it :)

Hell Yeah!
To say that I'm still waiting for the world in 2008 to catch up with this gem is probably understating how good this album was, and still is. Where are the new breed of musicians, distilling the world in the 21st C into a perfect 1hr of Sonic commentary? If now isn't the perfect time when will it ever be?
PWEI were so far ahead of the game, it sickens me! to think they just didn't get the rewards that this album deserved.
While the US had Ministry and later NIN et al, using equivalent sampling technologies to produce "Industrial" metal tinged sounds that incorporated dance/tekno beats , PWEI on the other hand were sampling from the full spectrum of culture in the late 80's Music, Literature, Film, Comics, Culture etc.... not just xeroxing it and shoe horning it into a track for the sake of it, but weaving it into the very fabric with wit and maturity.
THis is the day.... is an album you can come back to years later after soaking in several more years life, culture and suddenly a sample or section of lyric will jump out and hit you.
PWEI threw the gauntlet down in '89... when will anyone pick it up?
