5.0 out of 5 stars Strong, upbeat, definitely exotic; has a good sense of fun!, 25 Feb 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Mambo! (Audio CD)
This strong album has a good sense of upbeat humor to the songs, which you do not have to speak Spanish to appreciate. It is evident in the way Yma uses her voice, swinging from the extreme bass of her range, winging up, up, up to the dizzying heights in electrifying crescendos. There are some wonderful fast numbers with mambo beats, straight from cosmopolitan nightclubs, but also songs based on peasant festivals that capture the fun of carnival days in villages high in the Andes. It is definitely uplifting, upbeat and makes you want to dance and laugh! If you are a fan of hers, it's definitely a must-have. If you don't know of her, it's a wonderful introduction!

5.0 out of 5 stars Queen of quirky, 31 Dec 2007
This review is from: Mambo! (Audio CD)
This woman is remarkable...only just discovered her. The fifties/sixties Mambo backing band here plays a tight selection of bright and breezy latin tunes. So far, par for the course...but Sumac barks, twangs, whistles, growls and yodels over an unfeasible number of octaves...like Carmen Miranda...on amphetamines...in a padded cell. Her infectious singing voice will leave you grinning from ear to ear while you're doing the Fandango in your socks across the living room carpet ... crowned queen of fruit cakes. Bravo!

5.0 out of 5 stars A fun, energy filled vocal tour of South American music, 26 Feb 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Mambo! (Audio CD)
In 'Mambo!' Yma Sumac uses the exotic extremes of her voice to take you on a wild, moody tour of South American music, from steamy cosmopolitan night clubs to carnival music from villages high in the Andes . This is a celebration of life from of one of the world's most unforgettable voices. She really uses the extremes of her five octave range in a humorous way overlaying multiple tracks with her lowest bass accompanying mid-range singing. If you have never heard her before, get one of the samplers, and if you like the Exotic, you'll be hooked!!
