4.0 out of 5 stars another country classic, 28 Sep 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Sevens (Audio CD)
"Sevens" was the seventh album by Garth Brooks (hence the title) and after the rock sound that had characterised his "Fresh Horses" album this was a welcome return to a country sound for the undisputed king of country music. The album is brilliant and this is apparent from just one listen and its great to see Garth return to the style that suits him best. Although there are a couple of great slower tracks similar to his classics "The Dance" and "Thunder Road" such as "She's Gonna Make It", "I Don't Have To Wonder" and "Bellau Woods", the album is generally one of the most upbeat of his career (musically and lyrically) as is highlighted by the album's brilliant opening track the distinctly country sounding "Longneck Bottle". Generally speaking the album has a very positive message to it breaking the myth that country music is the white man's blues. Overall it's a great album and a return to form for Garth.

4.0 out of 5 stars LONGNECK COWBOY SHOWS BOTTLE, 10 Mar 2003
This review is from: Sevens (Audio CD)
Garth's last album, 'Fresh Horses' was a relative flop, which led to unpleasant repercussions at Capitol ... happily 'Sevens', produced by Allen Reynolds, was released, albeit way behind schedule, at the end of 1997. This is Brooks seventh albumn, containing seven tracks per side (on tape). Watch out for those moody shoots of a stetsoned Brooks, the cover shot on Sevens features him in a white T-shirt outside a stable playing with his buckle!
Those already familiar with Garth will know the drill, songs invariably fall into the following categories (a) the loud and rabble rousing, couldn't give a damn 'Friends In Low Places' (b) the slow, powerful ballad so successfully achieved in 'The Dance' (c) the cliche-ridden, sentimental stealer epitomised by 'She's Every Woman'.
Type (a) songs 'Longneck Bottle' co-wrote with Steve Wariner and 'Two Pina Coladas' live up to expectation. 'Belleau Wood' about soldiers at war in the trenches becoming united by the christmas carol ' Silent Night' ending in the immortal lines 'No, heaven's not beyond the clouds, It's for us to find it here' and the breathy duet with Trishia Yearwood 'In Another's Eyes' are typical (b) songs.
Predictably, type (c) songs dominate, 'I Don't Have To Wonder', 'She's Gonna Make It', 'Cowboy Cadillac' (a great prospective line-dance number), 'How You Ever Gonna Know', 'Do What You Gotta Do', 'You Move Me', 'A Friend To Me', 'Take The Keys To My Heart' ... enjoyable enough but in places more than a little twee.
The most striking track for me was 'When There's No One Around' which opens with a distictive sound and the memorable lines 'This is a song that nobody knows, I couldn't begin to describe how it goes, It makes me cry or laugh right out loud, It's a song that I sing when there's no one around.' And goes on in a similar vein.
Naturally, not all of the tracks were great but overall 'Sevens' gets 4 stars from me. So let's close out with these fine words from Garth 'Now I've gotta a smile that goes on for miles, With no inclination to roam, I've gotta say, That I think I've gotta stay, 'Cause this is feelin' more and more like home, So Bring me two pina coladas, one for each hand'.

I once owned this CD when it was first released. I loaned it out and it never returned. I loved it. Garth Brooks at his best. I ordered this through Amazon and although it came from the good old US of A the delivery was as promised and the CD in good condition. I will definitely use this supplier again
