4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent concept-style album, too progressive for some.
Many fans felt disappointed by the change to a slower and more openly progressive style although the heavier rock elements are still present in songs such as 'Disconnected' and the AOR leanings present in songs like 'My Global Mind'. An excellent album of oft-experimental and highly produced songs. From the opening Floyd-like intro to the eastern/Zep influenced 'I Am...

Many fans felt disappointed by the change to a slower and more openly progressive style although the heavier rock elements are still present in songs such as 'Disconnected' and the AOR leanings present in songs like 'My Global Mind'. An excellent album of oft-experimental and highly produced songs. From the opening Floyd-like intro to the eastern/Zep influenced 'I Am I' to the lengthy epic title track to the voice+piano version of 'Someone Else' (the full band version originally was on the 'I Am I' single & appears on the 'Greatest Hits' album), the breadth of styles and musically quality is impressive. The only criticisms are perhaps the scheduling of two ballads back to back (even though one of them is the excellent 'Bridge') and the lack of true 'Mindcrime' style rockers. Probably the most palatable of Queensryche's work for prog. rock fans although it probably won't appeal to those who prefer the harder AOR rock style of 'Mindcrime' and 'Empire'.

5.0 out of 5 stars Creative Peak, 28 Mar. 2013
This review is from: Promised Land (Audio CD)
Four years after their most commercial album "Empire" came this beautiful multi dimensional coming of age for the popular Seattle rockers. For me it is their creative peak, a nicely structured album that is a listening delight musically and lyrically. The mood is rather dark overall, certainly a contrast to "Empire" and its airplay friendly rock. This is far more serious, mature, intelligent. Some fans objected, but in my opinion it really cemented their reputation as a premier rock act of the 1990s with its greater depth overall. Certainly worth adding to any rock collection, a vastly underrated album that is as fresh today as it was in 1994. From the heavyweight "I Am I" and "Damaged" to the piano only "Someone Else", its a roller coaster ride that no self respecting rock fan can afford to miss.

If you like Queensryche then buy it, great songs as always by this fantastic group. Moody guitars and the inspired arrangements that all their songs have make this a winner. If u liked Operation Mindcrime then you will love this!!

I'm not too keen on some of Queensryche's other stuff. Well, not at the moment. However, this one stands out. It's an excellent album! Very proggy, and the vocals are amazing!
A must-buy!
