5.0 out of 5 stars When words fail, 13 Nov. 2013

This review is from: Tavener - Protecting Veil - Britten 3rd Suite for Cello (Audio CD)
Hard to believe that my review will only be the third to appear here. I expected up to a hundred, to be honest, such was and is the glittering reputation of this stunning work.
With John Tavener`s death this week, we have lost a thrillingly contrary, doggedly unorthodox voice in contemporary music. A composer who went his own way, oblivious to fashions and misguided criticism, and who created vibrant, original works which deserve far more than to be relegated to the so-called `faith minimalist` school in which lazy critics would enrol him. The only valid comparison to make between Tavener and Part or Gorecki is that all three wrote spiritually inspired music. It is all too easy to lump them together and so dismiss them into some kind of new age sound-world. They deserve better, in particular the flowing-haired Englishman.
I am not going to try to describe The Protecting Veil - I couldn`t even if I wanted to - other than to urge anyone who appreciates music of challenging beauty and occasionally dissonant vitality (see what I mean - words fail!) to hear this great work, especially in this first recording by cellist extraordinaire Steven Isserlis, who almost sounds as if he composed it himself, such is the relaxed brilliance of his playing.
There`s nothing wishy-washy or (heaven forbid!) `chilled` about Tavener. There`s muscle, substance and integrity here, as in all his compositions (and he managed to be prolific, despite battling illness so much of the time).
The Britten is a bonus, an appropriate and welcome one. But the main event has to be the astonishing, wholly original 45-minute work that will stand as one of this wonderful composer`s pivotal achievements.

Essential, and spikily beautiful.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unfailing brilliance of Isserliss yet again!, 2 Dec. 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Tavener - Protecting Veil - Britten 3rd Suite for Cello (Audio CD)
Isserliss plays with realy intensity, belying in-depth study and understanding of all 3 works. The performances are very vivid, and the LSO provide comparable intimacy to the solo cello: they are equally concentrated and involved as Steven is himself. A truly excellent and moving CD with depth of feeling in the playing.

4.0 out of 5 stars Profoundly musical performance by Isserlis, 5 Dec. 2011

This review is from: Tavener - Protecting Veil - Britten 3rd Suite for Cello (Audio CD)
I bought this CD only for Britten's 3rd cello suite to compliment Rostropovich's recording of 1st & 2nd suites. Isserlis' playing is no less captivating. He digs deep into the heart of Britten's music and gives profoundly musical performance of the 3rd suite.

John Tavener's Cello Concerto 'The Protecting Veil' is also played with genuine emotional involvement and deeply expressive tones. As for the music, I just can not appreciate it even after many play-backs. The opening theme tries desperately to develop and meanders through various harmonies and modulations, but inexplicably fails to capture the inspiration and remains where it started after 40 minutes or so.

That lack of inspiration is more acutely felt, in contrast to Britten's amazing ability to weave rich tapestries of music from a simple theme. I'd rather want all three of Britten's unaccompanied cello suites played by Isserlis on one disc than the only one of them sandwiched between Tavener's curiously earth-bound compositions.
