5.0 out of 5 stars Psychedelia classic with a CD warning, 18 July 2013

This review is from: Incense And Peppermints (Audio CD)
Here is another slice of psychedelic pop history. This great original album has to be in the collection of anyone that is interested in psychedelic or sixties music.
It is worth investigating despite having no UK chart success and very little radio air play.
Incense and Peppermints was the debut album from the psychedelic rock band Strawberry Alarm Clock.
The album was Released in late 1967 at the height of psychedelic culture. And although largely ignored in the UK it did get to number 11 on the American charts. The title track also charted high as a single in the American charts.

In pop history the group made much impact with this debut album and its follow up album Wake up It's Tomorrow and the singles from them being referenced many times as pointers to sixties psychedelic pop. In particular films have often used these tracks on their soundtracks including Psych Out and Austin Powers.

This Los Angeles group took reputedly their name as homage to Strawberry Fields Forever by the Beatles but I have doubts to that authenticity. But with song titles like Incense and Peppermints, Strawberries mean love and Rainy Day Mushroom Pillow the links to psychedelia and the likes of the Beatles are clear.
It is a truly interesting album with great arrangements and atmosphere.

Be warned. There is more than one version of the album available on this site and reviews are being repeated on more than one issue. So to clarify the version that at the moment is the cheapest has a cover with a white border frame with Strawberry Alarm Clock across the top. The catalogue number is B000002QTD and its on the MCA label. This is NOT the original album. It is a compilation album released in 1990 with alternative recordings and tracks taken from more than one album. It does not have the correct track listing for this album.
The other version that has a cover with the words Strawberry Alarm clock written in pink letters and has a
blue/green border frame around the bottom half is the right version with the correct track list. Catalogue number B005IY3AW8 on Sundazed Records.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sixties/Flower Power at its best!, 7 Dec 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Incense & Peppermints (Audio CD)
In the movie "Austin Powers: International Man Of Mystery", there is a scene in the "Electric Psychedelic Pussycat Swinger's Club" where everyone is dancing to 'Incense and Peppermints' by Strawberry Alarm Clock. It is because of this song I just had to buy this recording. If you like Sixties/Flower Power music, or it holds a fascination (as it does for me) you'll this. 'Sit With The Guru', 'Tomorrow' and 'Incense and Peppermints' have to be on the playlist for a really successful Swinging Shing-Dig. Upbeat, and typical of this era and type of music. 'Rainy Day Mushroom Pillow', 'Good Morning Sunshine' and 'Strawberry's Mean Love' are more mellow, but strong songs. 'Bird Man Of Alcatraz' has an early Rolling Stones type vibe. A great song, but what's with the Duck-call whistle? Most of the songs are organ/panpipe based, with guitars, great bass-lines and good lyrics. 'Starting Out The Day' is the excpetion, with a brass section. It works well. This recording will not appeal to anyone who doesn't already like this type of music. But for those who do, you'll love it as much as I do. My only gripe - 25 minutes and 58 seconds, the total play time, sure does fly by. Oh well, you can always play it again!

5.0 out of 5 stars Strawberry Alarm Clock, 27 Jun 2012

I cannot express how much joy I get from this record. There is something very special about putting vinyl onto a deck and sitting back with a glass and just listening and thinking about the day.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bare foot in the sixties., 13 Nov 2012

Attracted by the wonderful song 'Incense and Peppermints' by the equally delicious sounding Strawberry Alarm Clock, and remembering the music being used in Austin Powers (a little too young in the 60's to remember), I decided to check out the album of the same name. Great to chill out to while driving (will diffuse any road rage), perfect for a sixties party, or float around the room wearing nothing but patchouli oil and a smile(preferably when everyone else is out).
A talented band of the Hippy era who maybe didn't get as much attention at the time as they deserved - pull on that wig, sling on some love beads, stick two fingers up at the world and go back to the time of love and peace.

Perfect 60's psychedelia. As relevant now as it was then. The perfect soundtrack for lying around on a summer's day.

Tenía desde joven un EP de este grupo y me gustaba mucho. Quería tener un buen recopilatorio y ahora estoy contento.
