5.0 out of 5 stars The Best of "Bish", 31 Mar. 2001

This review is from: On and on: the Hits of (Audio CD)
One of those compilations that brings back memories of a (mis-spent?) youth at University, which is where I first heard of this singer-songwriter from San Diego, who is lucky to count Eric Clapton and Phil Collins as his friends.
All of his major compositions from 1977 to 1993 are here, including a sizeable chunk of his first two albums. The first "Careless" spawned the hits "On and On" (featuring Andrew Gold on electric guitar), "Save It for a Rainy Day" (Clapton on guitar this time) "On and On" and "Little Italy" - these last three plus the divine "Never Letting Go" feature the voice of Chaka Kahn as well on backing vocals.
Five tracks from the second album "Bish" are included, the best is the uptempo "Everybody Needs Love" which credits Gene Page (of Love Unlimited Orchestra fame) as co-arranger.
On the down side the tongue-in-cheek theme from the movie "Animal House" is included, which you will either see a glorious pastiche of 50's doo-wop or the most banal thing Bish has ever written. That said the collection is exemplary in covering Bish's movie theme-songs: "Somewhere Inbetween" from "China Syndrome", "Only Love" from "Arthur", "It Might Be You" from "Tootsie" are all here, plus the surprise package, a glorious acoustic version of that song from "White Knights" made famous by some Brit who played drums with Genesis, and yes, "Separate Lives" does indeed make you wish that MTV would do a Stephen Bishop "Unplugged". By the way, Phil Collins also crops up on drums and vocals on "Walking on Air".
To sum up "Bish" may not have the most powerful voice in the world, but he more than adequately manages to convey the feelings in the lyrics, and this compilation is a superb showcase of his talents. Full marks for the excellent essay from Todd Everett in the sleeve notes, too. Buy it and enjoy!

What a shame I was unable to acquire the original Stephen Bishop album on CD. This collection has most of his memorable songs albeit not in the order they appear on the album, one of my vinyl favourites..
