4.0 out of 5 stars Hooker meets Hendrix meets The Doors, 22 Dec 2012
This review is from: HOOKER, JOHN LEE - ENDLESS BOOGIE (Audio CD)
I'm very surprised to see other reviewers recommend this album to fans of Hooker's 50s/60s work, or claim it to to be "nothing out of the ordinary". On both counts this album is a distinct musical diversion from what one would normally expect with Hooker.

The easiest way to describe the general vibe of "Endless Boogie" is John Lee Hooker meets The Doors via Jimi Hendrix. None of the latter appear here but stylistically those elements are in place, sometimes subtly, more often not so subtly.

What we have with this album is a concept similar to that of the slightly earlier Hooker and Heat, wherby Mr. Hooker once again teams up with a bunch of young long-hairs more atuned with the world of Rock music than Blues purism. I would argue the end result with Endless Boogie sounds far more natural than that of Hooker and Heat. The former comes across like a unified working band at their peak, whereas the latter has the atmosphere of two different artistes joining together for a one-off event.

The boogie here isn't quite as "endless" as the title would suggest. There are some slower numbers peppering this double-album's worth of material, but when the boogie hits the spot it does feel endless in the best possible sense because the average track length is about six minutes. And when things slow down they tend to simmer, hypnotically so.

As for the mastering, there's a lovely natural warmth to the sound of this album on the original MCA CD release (MCAD 10413). I have no clue how the later release on BGO sounds in comparison, but I do know the MCA features the complete original tracklist whilst for some strange reason the BGO omits a whopping four tracks (losing almost 25 minutes of music in the process!).

So my rating for Endless Boogie?

On MCA, A solid four stars.

The BGO release? Well, even without hearing it I don't consider it unreasonable to dock it a star in comparison due to the original tracklist being butchered. So three stars for that one.
