4.0 out of 5 stars One for the dedicated fans, 25 Nov. 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Lynyrd Skynyrd (Audio CD)
If you're new to Lynyrd Skynyrd this is not the place to start, let's say that up front. If, like me, you were a dedicated follower all the way to the end this becomes an essential set to own.
What makes it special is the way you can chart the progress of the band from something that sounds little more than a bunch of friends jamming in the garage to one of the most accomplished and just downright enjoyable rock acts of the seventies. Even in the early days you can tell they had a certain spark but who would have guessed that the simple ballad "Freebird" presented here would have evolved into the anthem that it finally became.
Along with the music there's a useful booklet which if not the most authoratitive history of the band available at least provides the necessary background to the recordings.

5.0 out of 5 stars excellent collection now redundant, 5 April 2010

This review is from: Lynyrd Skynyrd (Audio CD)
This was a stunning box in its day but its been made largely redundant, obsolete by the fantastic remastering campaign which has resulted in the majority of all the rarities here being placed on the relevant remasters.

All the classics are here as you would expect,Freebird.Sweet Home Alabama,Call me The Breeze,Gimme 3 Steps,That Smell etc and with an excellent booklet, although again the remasters have far superior, informative booklets.

Really this would only be for completeists now as the first 3 tracks in this set are Quinn Ivy Demo's from 1970 of 'Freebird','Junkie' & 'He's Alive' none of which have appeared anywhere else to my knowledge, certainly on official releases, its sureal listening to Freebird with no guitar frenzied ending.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lynyrd Skynyrd - Box Set, 25 Mar. 2014
This review is from: Lynyrd Skynyrd (Audio CD)
I brought this box set back in 1991. It's still one of my favourite box sets out of the 100s I own.
The first CD contains some magnificent songs from their early days. Junkie (with a great wah wah pedal solo) and He's Alive, another fantastic song that should have been issued earlier. Free Bird is a classic but there are many more great songs here. Listening to this on headphones is the way to go, the mixing of all the guitars by Al Kooper was brilliantly done, they really blend well and sound great. Each CD does show a progression up until the final sessions with Steve Gaines who sadly died as did the lead singer Ronnie. This is a great kick ass rock collection of great songs. The booklet is also very informative, not sure if it has e same content in the current issued version, hope it does.
A must get.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great box set, 3 Oct. 2006
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Lynyrd Skynyrd (Audio CD)
I did the opposite to what advice someone would give when trying out new music or a new band and immediatley purchased the box set on only knowing and hearing 3 songs, Junkie,Free bird & he's alive. Usually i am cautious, but i thought what the hell, go for it, and i am glad i did the box set is superb and music outstanding, great rock music with great well constructed tunes and lyrics and the group rock.

A well deserved 5 stars for music alone.
