4.0 out of 5 stars Lou Returns With A Hugely Likeable Album, 5 Aug. 2006

This review is from: Set The Twilight Reeling (Audio CD)
The most striking aspect of Set The Twilight Reeling on a first listen is the fact Lou had rediscovered some of the raw energy/ vitality which had been generally lacking on his previous highly praised trilogy of albums(New York, Songs For Drella, Magic And Loss). Even Lou's vocals sound revitalised as he seemed more prepared to stretch himself instead of resorting to the increasing flat talking/singing which was growing ever more evident leading up though Magic And Loss. Although Set The Twilight Reeling never quite achieved such critical acclaim as the previous trilogy of albums for me at least this makes it a whole lot more palatable.

The songs are incredibly sharp and concise and it's nice to see Lou's occasional bass player Fernando Saunders back in action ('Trade In' has a wonderful bass sound).

Lou has in more recent years stressed the importance of the recorded 'sound' of music and i think this album is an example of where the playing and recording fit together in perfect unison. The album really does have a great sound.

Highly recommended.

The guitar sound on this record is wonderful, particularly the bass lines of Fernando Saunders. The 'Finish Line' is a fitting tribute to Sterling Morrison, and there are wonderful contributions from 'Mrs Lou Reed' Laurie Anderson on 'Hang On To Your Emotions'.

Just one star off for the rather dubious live track about one's parents.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perhaps the best Lou album, 28 Dec. 2007

I have always loved this cd, finally I own some decent speakers and listened to it again today with fresh ears, it's beauty is deft.
Sure some of the playing is flawed, mistakes here and there, the unforgiving electronic drum kit; but that's what makes it perfect, its like a jam where they are all in the groove and time stops and the music takes over. Other 'artists' may have done overdubs or retakes to get it right but not Lou. Some songs seem to finish on the wrong note or chord but it feels right.
The lyrics are up there with the best of Lou, bitter and funny.
You may agree that some of his cds are patchy and some are great, this is great.
I just feel like i'm sat in the corner of the room and there is this great rehearsal going on and I am lucky to have witnessed it, that's how I feel everytime I put this on.

Lucky.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lou Reed's best album to date., 30 Dec. 2001
This review is from: Set The Twilight Reeling (Audio CD)
Up close and personal with Lou Reed, this for me is the pinnicle of Lou Reed's career. If you love Reed's music you may never get this CD out of your player!!
The style of Set the twilight reeling is a mixture of accoustic brilliance, bone crushing power and Lou Reed's own particular brand of ironic humour.
Tracks like Riptide draw on that wonderful discord from the days of the Velvets, whereas the majority of tracks are half sung, half rapped and all touching.
STOP READING THIS AND START LISTENING TO THIS ALBUM, your ears will love for ever!!
