5.0 out of 5 stars The glorious voice of Julie Andrews singing Christmas songs, 13 Dec 2003

This review is from: Christmas With Julie Andrews (Audio CD)
I tend to think that Julie Andrews would be the ideal person to stand up and sing Christmas carols at a church service on Christmas Eve, and I suspect that "Christmas With Julie Andrews" is a large part of the reason why. There is a combination of power and grace that makes "Oh Come All Ye Faithful" and "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing" sound like they should be should be filling up a great cathedral like Westminster Abbey, and you do not doubt for a second that Andrews could do it. This makes it all the more impressive when she tones down the power but retains the grace in songs like "Away in the Manger," "O Little Town of Bethlehem," and "Silent Night, Holy Night." As with her other holiday albums, this 1982 release presents not only these favorites, but a strong mix of lesser-known traditional songs including "In the Black Midwinter," "The Holy Boy," and "Patapan." For me the treat is "I Wonder as I Wander," a song that I associate with Mary Travers singing on the Peter, Paul & Mary's 1988 "Holiday Celebration Album." The differences in the voices are striking, but both interpretations are beautiful. Granted, these are not exactly the sort of Christmas albums where you feel compelled to sing along, but if you really want your seasonal spirits to soar then the glorious voice of Julie Andrews is most likely to get you up among the rafters.

5.0 out of 5 stars Christmas album shows Julie at her best - pure magic, 16 Nov 2002

(TOP 50 REVIEWER)    (No. 1 Hall OF FAME REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
Julie's lovely voice is ideally suited to these Christmas songs, which are especially well chosen. There is a mix of the obvious songs (Silent night, Away in a manger and others) and the very obsucure (See amid the winter snow).
One of my favoties here is Julie's magnificent rendition of In the bleak midwinter. This song is very popular in Britain (so it's no surprise to see it here - Julie would have learned it at school) but not in America. I don't know why, but there are several Christmas carols like that - another example is While shepherds watched their flocks, although Julie did not record that.
Perhaps the best track of all is The secret of Christmas. This oldie (it was written by Sammy Cahn and Jimmy van Heusen) is rarely recorded these days, although Shedaisy included it on their Brand new year album.
If you want a Christmas album recorded in a classic style, beautifully sung with orchestral backing which adds to, but does not get in the way of, the song, this is as good as anything you will find. Julie never sounded better than on this Christmas album. Her other Christmas album is also outstanding, but this one is pure magic.
