5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Figaro, 11 Feb 2004
This review is from: Mozart: Le nozze di Figaro (Audio CD)
To my ears, this is the best recording of Le Nozze di Figaro.
Boehm's pacing is, as ever in Mozart, immaculate.
Prey as Figaro is ideally weighty and not too funny(why should Figaro be funny with his suspicions?), Fischer-Dieskau is as refined as one would expect but he's also scheming and villainous and the two tenors are excellent in their roles.
The Marzelline sounds just the right age - not an old matron or a young girl - and has the perfect degree of hardness in the voice. Mathis' Susanna is charming, witty and romantic and Troyanos is passionate and confused as Cherubino.
The star here, though, is definitely Janowitz as the Contessa - her voice is so beautiful (and ideal for Mozart and Richard Strauss) it defies description but she is also dramatic and moving.
All arias are included (a rarity) and are sung by the appropriate singers (not so on some earlier sets) and, though this is a recording from the 60's, the sound is great.

5.0 out of 5 stars The version against which all others should be measured., 12 Jan 2011
This review is from: Mozart: Le nozze di Figaro (Audio CD)
Engaging from the first bars - the overture is the only piece of music which has ever made my laugh out loud - this is an elegant, balanced performance, with all the usually omitted arias included.

Despite the age of the recording, the sound is excellent and the ensemble cast from Don Curzio upto the Countess give fine performances, in each case the age and weight of the voice fitting the part exactly. The Count of Fischer-Diskau is sensual and menacing, the Susanna agile and bright and the Countess of Gundula Janowitz is beautiful and heart-breaking.

My test of a good Nozze is the section which starts "Deh! signor, nol contrastate;Consolate i miei desir." in Act 2. This version passes triumphantly with a passion and a balance of voices found nowhere else I have found.

Don't be put off by the age of these CDs. The clarity of music, singing and general performance is breathtaking. I suggest you read other people's reviews. Incidentally one of the arias was used in the film Shawshank redemption. It's use in the film was stunning. For a moment everything came to a standstill in the story. I believe it was this performance that was used in the original soundtrack. Supplier utterly reliable.

The most wonderful recording of probably the most fun opera there is. Great singing, a comic plot that Shakespeare would've been proud of - and the most sublime, incandescent music beautifully-recorded and zestfully-conducted. Simply put, there has never been a better set of Figaro and it's never been such wonderful value.

Buy this and don't be put off by the picture of Gary Glitter on the cover!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great version of Mozart's Marriage of Figaro, 18 Feb 2013

This review is from: Mozart: Le nozze di Figaro (Audio CD)
I bought this because this is the recoding that was use in the film "The Gren Mile" from the scene where the main character plays a record of an opera aria over the prison PA system. After listening to the rest of the opera I found it was just as enjoyable. Also reading the polt of the opera in the booklet that came with the CD it could have been the story from any soap opera on TV :).
