5.0 out of 5 stars As great as you remember it to be.
No point saying much about the performances, - they've been classics of the gramophone for 28-29 years now and deservedly so. Like other reviewers, I’ve loved them in all their incarnations. This one seems to me the best yet. No, the sound may not be as good as some new DSD recordings but its a darned sight better than most. I was sceptical about the surround...

2.0 out of 5 stars A dissenting voice
One of the great things about being alive is that you get to hold opinions which are different from all the other people ... like ...

"Mozart is rubbish, Haydn wrote much better tunes"

or ... about the present recording of the Beethoven Fifth Symphony ...

"This is the most over-rated and over-hyped recording of any piece ... ever"...

Buy it for the fifths, not for the seventh. Symphony no. 5 is marvelous. Maybe one of the all best fifths. It get a WOW factor from me. Not the seventh. It too fast for me specially in the second mouvment. The Allegretto". There are som others very good, f. eks. F. Friscay from 1960. Leonard Bernstein from late 70s. But Kleibers no, 5 from 1975 is marvelous, magnificent.

I have listened to this at least 200 times and have barely scratched the surface.
Even if you dont like classical music you should still buy this CD, as it defies all classification both music genre and date.
Nothing comes close for being as musically dense without sacrificing harmony.
Possibly the best work of the worlds greatest ever musician.

4.0 out of 5 stars Heresy!, 6 Aug. 2009

I belong to that probably small minority of people who have wondered why this disc has consistently received rave reviews. It is good, but not that good! If you want to hear these symphonies played in this way then, in my view, George Szell does it far better. And the Cleveland Orchestra in Szell's time was a better orchestra than the Vienna Philharmonic. All heresy, of course, but that's how it sounds to me!

5.0 out of 5 stars recorded music ...., 1 Dec. 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Beethoven: Symphonies Nos. 5 & 7 (Audio CD)
doesn't always let you down. Yes, it's true the 5th almost nulls reaction. It is easy to put it aside as known, loved, more an idea than a piece of music. This recording saves it from banality. Here Kleiber creates music as if it were being created in the here and now, and it is possible to simply receive a masterpiece almost uadulterated. For all the dross that surrounds it the 5th is a masterwork of human invention and this recording makes it resoundingly fresh and intrusive. Here, you will find the 5th is not just hommage but music. What more can you ask? Beethoven is not just our contemporary, he also makes us see how strange we are.

I am not musically literate, i.e i dont know a crotchet from a quaver but i know what i like, is it an exagerration to say that if we had to show one example of the greatness and potential of human culture, to say some visiting aliens, would it be reasonable to play them these recordings?
