As a spotty teenager at home, the first "banana" VU album was the only record which on separate occasions made my mum enter the room to say "I really like this. What is it?" and "For God's sake will you turn this awful racket down".

This "Best of " provies opportunitites for both and has more. Yes, and it is also missing some crackers too.

A splendid, delightful range of sounds that copied nobody but was subsequently much copied. "What goes on" would still definitely find its way into my top 5 tunes of all time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best of The Velvet Underground, 18 May 2009
If you're curious about The Velvet Underground this is a very good way of hearing what they were like, and then if you want to you can see what the albums are like. Here you get all of the very good ballad-like songs that Nico sang on as well as some of Lou Reed's best songs. "Heroin" and "White Light / White Heat" are not the most accessible of songs, they screach and distort and it might take a while for you to like them or you may not like them at all in preference to the rock music that is on the rest of this CD. My favourites have to be "Waiting For The Man" and all of the songs with Nico. On the front cover there is a nice photo of the band with Andy Warhol that I haven't seen on any other CD of The Velvet Underground.

The Velvet Underground were, and still are, one of rock and rolls best bands. They were making groundbreaking music even when noone was buying it.
The cool, slightly faggy, sardonic Lou Reed, who wrote nearly all of the VU songs, mixed sleazy lyrics about queens and drug dealers (and drugs, naturally) and all other types of street life to pop melodies, and the band could rock (what goes on, i'm waiting for the man) as well as they cold do the slower, touching number (candy says, i've found a reason).
This is a pretty good collection of their work, which consisted of four essential studio albums and three live albums also worth purchasing, as well as two seperate albums of extra material recorded in between albums released in the 80's. There are some essential VU tracks which are not on this CD, but that just means you can discover them on the albums! You lucky piggies!
Now no greatest hits collection could ever do justice to the albums released by the VU, their debut album being apparently one of the most influential recorde in rock history, the second being a strangely wonderful blast of sonic sound, the third countering slow and fragile pop songs with downright tunes and a half, and the fourth has Sweet Jane (that shut you up did'nt it?)
Still, i would reccomend to anyone interested in this band to first buy the third album, and then use your opinion of that record to decide whether you'll purchase the rest (none of them are expensive anyway, you can ussualy get them for maybe a fiver), as the third album is probably the most accessible.
Also with a greatest hits theres a danger you're gonna ruin some of your enjoyment of the albums if you already know some of the tracks, so take my advice, buy the third (it's self titled) and then buy the rest, starting with the first.
Anyway, you can't go wrong, you're listening to the best, most inventive, dirty, cool band ever. And yes, i havent forgot about The Beatles. In fact i like The Beatles. Very Much. They can be the second best band ever. It'll be a first for 'em. Lou Reed Rocks.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lovely, 22 Oct 2010

Lovely dark side to some feminine indie rock... I personally prefer Mott the Hoople's cover of Sweet Jane to the original
Has a similar hypnotic effect as The Doors on me - especially 'Heroin' - love it!

Yes, I really am that old. And I don't mind at all having some of the best stuff in a handy compilation. Totally recommended. Not to know and love this music is to be for ever fatally ignorant. Just imagine that the track heroine was actually before the stupid little Beetle boys did their Sgt Pepper LP. This is large-scale, adult music, with a lovely ironic twist and is so much copied these days that not to hear the originals is a crime.

You also need to buy the album with Sister Ray on it, White Light, White Heat.
