5.0 out of 5 stars Stark raving brilliant, 12 Sep 2007
This review is from: Teenage Doll (Audio CD)
The Germans went where no American did before-they put out dozens of LPs called High School Pop -seperated by numbers-and here they concentrate on one of its branches the Hot Boppin' Girl.
When the first albums came out in this series they included names like Teresa Brewer and other more obviously famous names but Teresa in spit of singing about hot boppin girls in the 50s jarred on the concept.
And that is the Hot Boppin Girl is virtually unknown outside her own region and usually has a country pedigree of sorts.
The music is Rural not Urban and I'm sure the original compilers had included names like LaVern Baker who are not Hot Boppin' Girls at all but R & B singers.
Hot Boppin' Girliana is pure white music and ideally it has a girl singer with a shrill voice where perfect pitch is a disadvantage.
The melodies are the most basic-where Haley,Berry and Elvis are never far away Usually half way through comes a crazed sax solo.
The most famous Hot Boppin Girls would be Janis Martin,Wanda Jackson,Jo Ann Campbell and early Jackie de Shannon.Brenda Lee was a Hot Boppin Girl through the 50s and is typical of many who survived the business. After all few remained in this turf after the bubble burst and like Peggy Little went into mainstream country.
Its wonderfully innocent music-more were like Brenda Lee who admitted she never knew what Lets jump the broomstick meant till years after she'd cut it but Janis Martin more worldly I suppose was married at 17 thus ending her career.
Its the absolute feel good music and in these 6 volumes are with 30 tracks each you get nearly 200 mostly obscure girls against a few the Germans think fir the concept eg Patsy Cline-who actually WAS unknown when she cut her pre Decca stuff!
