5.0 out of 5 stars Great Tunes
I bought this for Colas Breugnon - an Overture I have loved for 50 years but never had a record!

This is terrific

And also The Comedians - Splendid Stuff

All TUNES!!!

3.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing D-D-D
This NAXOS release is a real disappointment. The recording lacks presence, the conductor often lacks zip, the treble lacks bite, the bass lacks definition, the percussion is distant, the film studio acoustic is somewhat fuzzy... Need I go on?

This NAXOS release is a real disappointment. The recording lacks presence, the conductor often lacks zip, the treble lacks bite, the bass lacks definition, the percussion is distant, the film studio acoustic is somewhat fuzzy... Need I go on?

The Colas Breugnon suite is the best of the three offerings in terms of the interpretation, but the final movement of the Comedians is a joke in itself - ponderous and lacklustre, and with a totally unneccessary ritardando in the last couple of bars, possibly a nod to the end of Shostakovich's 5th - but WHY???

Sound-wise, quite the worst all-digital CD I have bought. Neither of my stereo systems makes it sound convincing, which is a rare state of affairs.

I should end on a more positive note: the music itself is delightful. Kabalevsky cannot quite aspire to the heights of a Shostakovich on account of his lack of symphonic output, but he certainly knows how to write music with flair and originality, melody, harmony, and satisfying scoring for large orchestra.
