This review is from: Shostakovich - Piano Concertos, etc (Audio CD)
A competent performance of these fine works.

No quibbles at all with the joi-de-vivre exhibited by the orchestra in the opening "Festival Overture". The "Age of Gold" ballet suite is equally finely presented, even if the music itself is not Shosta's best.

No-one can complain either about Michael Houstoun's playing in the two piano concertos. The third movement of the second concerto does plod in places, but this is a minor detail. However, there is a problem with the trumpet solo in the lento of the first concerto, despite the trumpeter, John Taber, starting so well. it's only a few bars that are amiss, but they surely should have re-recorded!

But do not let these minor matters put you off from purchasing these overall fine performances, especially at this price!
