5.0 out of 5 stars quality quartet playing of key Shostakovich works, 15 Jan 2008
This review is from: Shostakovich: String Quartets (Complete), Vol. 2 (Audio CD)
I've enjoyed this cd from the Eder Qrt for over ten years and the quality of playing and interpretive depth matches many recordings by more famous Qrts such as the Borodins (EMI/Virgin), Emersons (DG) and Fitzwilliams (Decca) : a self recommending bargain basement recording of 3 key Shostakovich quartets. the Eight quartet is justifiably famous in particular. start perhaps with DSCH's Qrt no.1 as its the most approachable then the justifiably famous, dark yet emotionally powerful no.8 then the even darker no.9 .

the entire Eder Qrt/naxos series of all 15 quartets is very good indeed and a great inexpensive place to start exploring Shostakovich's remarkable quartet cyle. possibly closely followed by the Borodins + the Fitzwilliam Qrt box sets. buy any of these with total confidence. post-classical,austere,melancholic yet undeniably deeply moving works and empathetic performances here by the Eder Qrt.

Addendum - i would strongly recommend Benjamin Britten's equally marvellous + huanted, yet sophisticated string quartets 1- 3. Both composers met several times + are said to have influenced each other in their work.

Needed this for a Holocaust Memorial Service I was conducting - it really worked, so atmospheric when used with multi-media. Great!
