5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent introduction to English string music
This is another bargain from Naxos. In a well thought out programme it combines well-known works such as Britten's Variatons on a Theme by Frank Bridge and Warlock's Capriol Suite, with some lesser-known works such as Holst's St Paul's Suite (which would be excellent 'Classic FM' material) and some charming 'Aquarelles' by Delius. 3.0 out of 5 stars Excellent in parts
I did enjoy this CD, but found that it could of been more varied with-respect to the composers it choose.

This is another bargain from Naxos. The playing of the Bournemouth Sinfonietta is first rate, with committed playing and good ensemble which embraces both the spiky rhythms of Britten with the lush pastoral sound world of Vaughan Williams and Delius. Recording quality is also excellent. Cautious listeners might skip the opening 'Variations' - but otherwise just play it straight through. Whatever, buy it!

The sound and playing quality is good, and the performances generally roll along nicely.

However, I was disappointed with the interpretaion of Britten's 'Variations on a theme of Frank Bridge', which is in my view the most profound of the selections on this disc. This is a cerebral composition which requires marked changes in tempo and volume to express the changes in mood of each variation. The Bournemouth Sinfonietta seem to me to miss the subtlety of expression that Britten intended. Also I found that the pauses between the variations too long, something that Britten did not do in his own recording. Here I can recommend Britten's own performance conducting the ECO Britten: Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra to appreciate the difference.

In summary, this is a good value Naxos CD if you are not too serious about Britten's piece. The other works are more in keeping with the style of playing of the Bournemouth Sinfonietta.

On this disc are some of England's finest 20th century composers - Holst and vaughan Williams, Delius and Britten. The Bournemouth Sinfonietta directed by Richard Studt gives pleasing perormances of The St Paul's Suite, Five Variants on Dives and Lazarus, Two Aquarelles (sorted by Eric Fenby) and Variations on a Theme of Frank Bridge. What a work of unique power and insight! The CD is finished off with the wit and wisdom of The Capriaol Suite by Philip Hesltine (Peter Warlock) based on Arbeau's dance manual of 1589. Just to mention one tiny detail. I really did enjoy the harp playing on the Vaughan-Williams. I feel a deep debt of gratitude to the original makers of English music that the folk tradtion enthusiasts uncovered- such memorable tunes.
