I've always enjoyed that nearly strangest of all Parliament songs: "The Silent Boatman"; from where could it have come? Well now we all have an opportunity to spend some time with Ruth Copeland, who has the writing credit for it. Many of us know just how bizarre George Clinton and his P-Funk, Mob Thing could be, but Ruth added something special, that is to say, even more out-there. Her own version of the "Silent Boatman" is definitely a standout on this collection. Other high-points include her covers of the Stones' "Play with Fire" and "Gimme Shelter." Her backup band? None other than core members of the P-Funk Mob. But niftier still is that Ruth is from Durham County, making a definitive link between P-Funk, Detroit and the Northeast of England (check out the first track: "Prologue: Child of the North"). Other goodies include "The Medal," "Hare Krishna," and "Suburban Family Lament;" who couldn't relate?

Great music played by the original parliament/funkadelic band with eddie hazel on guitar, Not so great, but still ok singing by ruth copeland with the exception of the opera track "un bel di" which is weird beyond description. Underrated albums. The first one the best (4-stars)
