4.0 out of 5 stars A game of two halves
The first "suite" on this album - The Queen's Suite - would get 5 stars, the rest two stars. It's worth buying for the Queen's Suite anyway - from the gorgeous opening track (Sunset & the Mockingbird) to the dramatic finale (Apes & Peacocks) it's full of beautifully orchestrated themes ... and this album is more about writing than improvisation. 2.0 out of 5 stars Not my cup-of-tea!
I prefer Trad Jazz but my wife wanted it so she got it! I can't really get into the Duke but there we are - it takes all sorts.

The other two suites are mediocre by Ellington's standards - you'll probably listen only the once. A pity the Queen's Suite couldn't have been paired with something more substantial (e.g. the New Orleans Suite, of the later suites). Ah well, if the history of the Queen's is true, we're lucky to have it at all ...

This review is from: The Ellington Suites (Audio CD)
This cd contains Ellington's sublime Queen's Suite (1959) along with interesting but lesser late works featuring a band reduced reduced by the deaths of many of its best soloists.

The Queen's Suite is twenty minutes of choice Ellingtonia, beautifully recorded. Lush arrangements and one Duke's most beautiful piano solos. The story is that he wrote is after being presented to the Queen after a command performance (which is more than Acker Bilk ever did), had a single copy pressed and sent to her and stashed the tapes where no discerning listeners could hear them. A pity, since this is some of his best work from his hi-fi period and the Windsors are a notoriously philistine bunch. I imagine HRH gave her copy to Princess Margaret who played it at a few of her well-heeled debauches and then forgot about it.

Wonderful that we can now appreciate it in all its glory.

Entirely different to the mainstream of his work so widely available elsewhere, this set of songs - entirely correctly called suites - was made much later in his career and provided a new sound. I hightly recommend these to anyone intrested in a mellow big band sound.
