5.0 out of 5 stars A Massive Triumph
I came to this album very late - 13 years late to be exact - and I'm still in the honeymoon period with it, playing it constantly. I'm probably about to say the same as everyone else but there's not a duff track here, mainly because of the different styles at play (jazz, hip-hop, dub, dance, bits of soul, the beginnings of trip-hop, tribal beats with 'Hymn of the big...

2.0 out of 5 stars Awful remix
I love Massive Attack and bought this remix as my original was worn out, scratched, ruined from overuse.

Such high hopes for this disc, it is rubbish. The sound quality even on the DVD hi-res version is compressed, it sounds oppressive, the bass is too forward, the mix is heavier, less light and air. On the CD the same is true except on mine there were some...

Great classic of it's time. Takes me back to the early nineties and happy nights out. Well worth a listen to those who don't know it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Track 3 on repeat, 7 April 2000

(REAL NAME)

I stumbled across this album by accident soon after it came out, having taped a mix on a pirate radio station back in the days when I didn't have much else better to do with my time. One song on the mix really knocked me over, which wasn't hard as I'd just had a bifta. The song in question was Blue Lines - I kept playing it on repeat in the house and car - listening to the hypnotic mixture of bass that manages to be deep and delicate, complex and immediate. The lyrics are are mixed in low, and are vague and often indistinct, but combined with a quality melody over the top, like some early REM stuff this adds to the effect, making you want to listen again to find out more until the song ends up lodged in your mind. I eventually twigged the name of the song through Tricky's mumbling, which led me to the album. I'd been listening to nothing but diet of techno & hard house, preceded by a couple of years of not liking anything that wasn't certified cool in the NME. Blue Lines opened me up to new things though. This album has a range of styles and vocalists, and no two songs are similar. Hip Hop, Reggae, Soul, to pretty much a classical composition all click, mainly due to the stunning material and vocalists. Unlike most albums, when I stick this on I never feel the urge to skip tracks. I can't explain what they all sound like, but this is probably the album that created "trip hop" - and has never been bettered. Buy it and increase the quality of your chill out experience.

5.0 out of 5 stars Modern Classical music......, 24 Jan. 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Blue Lines (Audio CD)
Quite simply, this album is a work of modern art. A dark undercurrent of swooping basslines and sublime vocals, mould together to form a beautiful testiment which opitomises the "post summer of '89" feeling that gripped the nation throughtout the early nineties. Nothing has come close since. And it is doubtful that anything ever will.....

5.0 out of 5 stars Astonishing, 6 Mar. 2001

10 years old and still fresher than a freshly picked daisy. Definitely one of the top 10 albums of all time. Enough has already been made of the sound - but what about the lyrics. Quite brilliant throughout, and especially Five Man Army and Blue Lines. Far and away the best Massive Attack album, and that's saying something.

5.0 out of 5 stars THE album of the 1990's, 3 Jan. 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Blue Lines (Audio CD)
One of the most wonderfull albums ever maid. Laid back grooves, rap , trip hop and the single of the 1990's Unfinished sympathy featuring the voice of Shara Nelson. They released other strong albums but, none matched the genius of this their debut. Supurb!
