5.0 out of 5 stars Best Death Metal Album OF All TIME., 27 July 2004

This Album is as good as death metal albums get. To this day it still has the same effect on me as in 1995.I own all of their albums and this is the best. They somehow get everything right here. The title track is unbelievable, so are When Satan.. Trick Or Betrayed, Kill The Christian, well all of them. You dont even need to be a massive death metal fan to like the albums. This is the work of genius, when Glen Benton truly became Satan in the disguise of a human being. Buy at all costs!

4.0 out of 5 stars Third time lucky, 14 Oct. 2004

Having given up on their attempt to become the fastest and most technical death metal band in the world, (something they were never going to achieve once the likes of Suffocation arrived on the scene and moved the goalposts), Deicide returned to the habit of writing hook-filled songs with recognisable verses and choruses for their 3rd album Once Upon the Cross. With noticeably more standout guitar riffs than on their previous 2 albums, Once Upon the Cross sees the band hit a new high, with some classic catchy tracks like When Satan Rules His World and They Are The Children of the Underworld. The album is also noteworthy for its cover artwork, which in true old school Cannibal Corpse fashion was deemed so offensive by the record label that it had to be hidden inside the booklet, with a censored replacement version taking its place on the cover. Simple straightforward unadventurous death metal, but done with great style and aggression.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, 1 Mar. 2002

This review is from: Once Upon The Cross (Audio CD)
This seems to be the most well known Deicide album, probably for its highly offensive cover. I remember buying this in 1995 and feeling very embarassed having to pay for it at the shop counter (similar to when I bought Korn's self-titled debut around the same time).
But the album itself is quite good. There are good, memorable death-thrash type tracks here ("Once Upon The Cross", "When Satan Rules His World" and "Kill The Christians" stand out here). The amusing thing about death metal is how some of the bands take themselves very seriously. The intro on the title track made me laugh. But the music isn't laughable. A solid effort.
Deicide's best album, however, is "Legion", a bona fide classic.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfection., 10 July 2000
By A Customer

Very little to say, other than every song's brilliant, the sound is intense, and Glen Benton must be the only artist alive who can get away with flawlessly almost burping to music! Skip to "Trick or Betrayed". That's wonderful!
