This review is from: Storm of the Lights Bane / Where Dead Angels Lie (Audio CD)
During the mid-nineties, there was an upsurgence in black metal, mainly propagated by Mayhem and Emperor, and giving the necessary hype for Cradle of Filth.
Also during this time, major extreme metal bands were finally gaining major label deals.
Dissection melded the ideas of black and death metal into one quite easily. They took the two ends of extreme thrash, and brought them together. There have not been many bands able to do this successfully, but Dissection were one.
This album is very atmospheric, and very brutal at the same time. There is a small contribution to each track from Keyboards and the like, but this is exploited more, and to a better effect, with the intro and outro tracks.
The other 6 tracks follow the form of black metal, with fuzzy guitars, sometimes slightly more melodic or atmospheric passages to teh riffs, screaming vocals, and fast drumming throughout, but a lot of the more brutal riffs came from the death metal end of the spectrum.
This melding gave a grand texture to this album, and has made it a classic worthy of anyones collection. It can appeal to just about any fan of extreme metal.
As usual, bands like this never seem to be the one's that stick around for a very long time, so make sure that you get this one while it's still available in large numbers. It may become a collector's item soon!

5.0 out of 5 stars HAIL DISSECTION, 5 Jan 2008
Where can i begin, Dissection being one of my favorite bands of all time, they always were going to impress me, from The Somberlain through to Reinkaos, but this album certainly stands out. After hearing this album the first time, i was breath-taken. An atmospheric yet brutal journey through Sweedish metal at its best. This IS one of the finest metal albums of the 90's. HAIL DISSECTION

5.0 out of 5 stars The definitive melodic black/death metal album, 15 Jan 2010

Dissection unfortunately is no more, but they've left a few gems behind them, none brighter than "Storm of the Light's Bane", such an effortless, natural synergy of melody, black and death.
This is an essential album for the collection of anyone interested in black metal, melodic death metal, or even "extreme metal". Like all true masterpieces, it's not entirely obvious from the first listen, which makes it - like good wine - even better with time.
