The Donnas, an American all-female rock/pop punk band from Palo Alto, California sure do help fill the void caused by The Runaways and The Ramones being no more, and offer a good alternative, but it must be said not quite of the same quality to Joan Jett and Green Day. But that still leaves the girls Brett Anderson, Allison Robertson, Maya Ford, and Torry Castellano still very high up the ladder of accomplished and exciting performers of rock music played with an unadulterated straight-down-the-line beat.

There are 4 outstanding numbers on this album "Rock 'n' Roll Machine", "Checkin' It Out", "Speed Demon", and a real favourite of mine "You Make Me Feel Hot". The other numbers whilst not of the same quality, are still reasonable examples of The Donnas's rock style.

On this and other Donnas Albums I am impressed with the bass playing of Maya Ford who maintains the perfect rhythm framework on which Allison Robertson can overlay her great lead guitar playing. And besides, even though Maya's size has progressed with the bands success, I find her a real turn-on - shh don't tell her indoors!

4.0 out of 5 stars The Donnas Kick A** !, 22 Aug. 2002
By A Customer
Hav'nt especially got a lot to say about this record other than it is completely what you would expect from one of the finest female exports from the states. In contrast to many popular beliefs girls can rock and these girls prove it with a vengence. Although not the most polished album of all time, who cares? At the end of the day, "Good tunes, is good tunes!" Just to finish off if you think this is good, wait til you see the girls live! (Believe me you really do want to!) Have Fun - PAX

Okay lets get the negative out of the way first - what a terribly unflattering photo on the sleeve! Blimey! However once you put the disc on it's only praise that can be heaped on the band's second album. Yes it sounds like The Ramones in places, The Runaways in others and there is even a riff from the superlative "Seether" by Veruca Salt used on two tracks, but so what - if simple punk flecked rock n' roll is your bag then you can't go wrong. Some albums should never be over half an hour long and so what if all the songs are about r n' r, being a teenager and r n' r radio, you can shake your hair and dance to it which is more than you can to Radiohead. It has been rumoured that a shadowy male presence actually wrote all the songs on this, although that just sounds like inherent rock sexism to me, but what if he did the girls have proved over the last ten years and further five albums that they are more than capable of kickin' male band's butts. Yet another example that this straight down the line sound is done so much better by the gals just without such glowing plaudits (did somebody mention The Hives!)
