This review is from: Fabulous Flips Vol.2 (Audio CD)
In an era devoted to the mighty CD, kids don't know what you mean when you mention a "B" side. But in the days when 45's and 78's were the format of choice, the "B", or "flip" side of a record was sometimes a place to find a hidden gem or a genuine quality alternative to the designated "A" side (and more than one "B" side was known to outperform its supposed stronger side in the charts). And then there was of course, some hopeless throwaway item to be found there too - recordings that you would never ever want to go back to after you had made its unfortunate discovery in the first place. Like the first volume, the second CD of "Fabulous Flips" should have rather been more accurately called "Fascinating Flips". There are certainly a handful of "fabulous" recordings there - "Troubles, Troubles" by Clarence "Frogman" Henry really stands out, as do "Chuck Berry's "Little Queenie", Slim Harpo's "Don't Start Cryin' Now", and the wonderful "Well" by The Olympics, which has been a noticeble absentee from my CD collection for many years. The rest are good or good-ish, with very little that's downright awful, and that's where the compilers have done a good job, I think. A CD more for the avid enthusiast than for the casual collector, though.
