If you want to hear a piano loved and caressed by a great musical master, listen to "Taking A Chance On Love", played here is the style of Brahms.
Shearing is a truly great musician, and everything here is completely controlled, yet completely relaxed and enjoyed. The piano is close-miked, which gives a round, warm recorded sound.
You need to know classical repertoire, to fully appreciate what Shearing does here. The renditions of the popular standards are 'in the style of' various classical composers. How clever, to fit a popular song so neatly into Chopin's 4th prelude (even in the same key!). What a pity that the sleeve notes give no hint of this.
This is a master fully in control of, and loving, his instrument and his music. Lovely.
